Switching TracksSwitching Tracks published by Revel-Baker, authored by John Bradley, and Dave and Neta Jackson.

At mid-life, most people start to evaluate their life direction. They look at the past and they speculate about the future. Why do some appear happier, more productive in their work and others are burned out, frustrated with no hope?

The authors suggest that discovering one's inherent talents makes all the difference.

With over 20 years experience in helping mid-career adults with career development conflicts, Bradley draws from biographical sketches of five individuals. For each scenario the reader progresses through five critical stages of Adult Career Development as they see the individuals discuss their decisions, victories, and disappointments. These stages include:

  • Passionate Pursuits (ages 20-30)
  • Evaluating the Results (ages 30-35)
  • Confirmation or collision (ages 35-45)
  • Accelerated Performance (ages 45-55)
  • Heightened Performance or Bitterness (ages 55+)

This is not a "how to" but a warm and frank look at how our decisions can ultimately lead to the mastery of a trade of vocation as opposed to our senior years being shadowed by bitterness and disappointment.

(Review by "Christian Counseling Today")
Building on his experience as a career counselor, the author suggests that people go through five phases in their careers. Using case histories that are composites from his clients, Bradley illustrates and describes the stages of passionate pursuits (ages 20 to 30), reevaluation (early 30s), confirmation (ages 35 to 45), accelerated performance or devastation (ages 45 to 55), and heightened performance or bitterness (mid-50s and beyond). Three appendices add practical helps for people as they move through these phases.

The book is intended as a self-help volume and does have helpful guidelines for people "switching tracks" in their careers. Counselors who read this book are likely to find this to be a valuable and practical framework for understanding people who grapple with career issues at different stages in their lives.
